![]() ![]() Regardless of these potential heat issues, we tend to grab this pen daily due to its clean erasability. We didn’t have much issue with this, but the ink should reappear below 14 F in a freezer. One thing to keep in mind when using thermosensitive inks is that they will disappear at temperatures above 140 ℉, so try to keep them away from heat. However, we liked that the ink reserve was much larger than the Pilot – FriXion Ball Slim pen and lasted longer before needing to be replaced. We noticed some friction on the pen’s tip while writing, but our writing experience was still fairly smooth.Ĭompared to other gel pens we tested, the ink from both of the FriXion series came out lighter than permanent inks, so this is something that you should take into account. ![]() The rubber grip also makes it comfortable, and the retractable clip makes it easy to use. This pen is made with thermosensitive ink that allows you to remove mistakes cleanly by using its included eraser. If you are anxious about using permanent gel pens, then the Pilot – FriXion Ball Clicker is our favorite erasable gel pen. Pens that moved effortlessly while writing were ranked 10/10, while some pens like the Muji gel pen had too much friction and some skipping was ranked 2/10. We noted if there was any friction or skipping by both writing words and using lines across the page. We tested the gel pens on different paper types to see how smooth each pen wrote on each surface. (need photos of different hands holding pens?) Smoothness tests We tested each pen on different writers and noted the comfort level based on their design. We also observed if there was any feathering or bleeding on the paper during these tests. Pens ranked between 0-10 depending on their drying time (instantaneous is 10/10 and longer than 30 seconds is 0/10). Bleeding, feathering, and smudge testsįor each pen, we performed a smudge test to see how long the ink takes to dry. During these tests, writers noted each pen’s comfort level, ink smudge tests, and smoothness. We tested each pen over two months on different paper and materials, in varying lengths (like to-do’s, journals, instructions, and letters), and evaluated each pen’s user experience with different writers. These gel pens are all under $8 per piece, with many pens under $5. We selected 19 gel pens from smaller and well-known brands, with varying line thicknesses, designs, and other features like erasability and the option to refill the ink. Lastly, if you want to produce less waste, try to find a pen that you can refill in the future. If the permanence of pens troubles you, there are also erasable gel pens with ink removable with friction and heat. Different colors are important for people who like different options (or use color to organize). Gel pens also have other features to look for, like color options, erasability, or being able to buy refills. However, there are now gel pen brands that formulate an ink with faster drying times and they actually work! Other features Gel pens can be a little tricky with drying time because they’re often more watery this also depends on the thickness of the tip and the amount of ink that comes out. If you’re a lefty or have quirky-styled penmanship that ends up in lots of smudges, having a gel pen that is made for quick-drying will help with any potential ink accidents. Try to find pens with bodies that are appropriate for the size of your hands if you have bigger hands, it will be difficult to continuously grip a super slim pen and vice versa. A well-balanced pen also alleviates muscle cramping, or lighter pens could help with extended periods of writing. Pens with rubber or silicone grips were easier to use because they felt more secure in our hands. ![]() With this in mind, comfort level could completely depend on each person, but certain designs help support your fingers and hands during writing.įor example, some pens have silicone or rubber bands to contour to your grip. Keep in mind that how someone holds their writing utensil also affects their comfort level. The design of a pen affects how comfortable it is to hold for short or extended periods. However, the thickness also affected the darkness and vibrancy of the colors. ![]() We experienced that the thinner pen sizes produced thinner lines and less ink, which made them dry more quickly. Thickness also affects the amount of ink that comes out of the pen. The gel pens we tested come in various sizes ranging from 0.28 to 1 millimeter thick. The tip thickness or size of a pen is an essential feature because it affects the user experience, handwriting style, and quick drying time. This example checks off most of the boxes that anyone wanting an SS 454 LS6 (Chevelle or El Camino) would want: a popular color (Tuxedo Black), M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed, 4.10 Positraction rear end, Cowl Induction hood, power steering and power brakes. In later years, this concept was also used to side-step federal emissions standards for cars (most famously in the case of the 1978–79 Dodge Li’l Red Express) to surpass the performance of most cars. As such, not only did it wantonly borrow from the Chevelle hot-rod parts bin, but with the benefit initially of lower insurance rates as a truck. In the greater scope of things, this was always considered a truck by not only GM, but several state and province licensing authorities. It can be argued that the El Camino SS started the hot-truck phenomenon. And of course, the LS6 was the top of the line. These big-block monsters had a reputation of being fast, although they could be hard to control under full throttle - drive one of these things hard without being careful and your own rear bumper will try to pass you.įor 1970, the El Camino was also available in two Super Sport models - the SS 396 and SS 454, each in two flavors of tune. This continued into the restyled 1968 models. However, it’s also worth noting that the 396 became a stand-alone engine option as a non-Super Sport in 1966. While the Super Sport Chevelle existed since 1964, there was no SS Elky until 1966 - the Mark IV big-block engine carried over into the El Camino, and the SS 396 became a bona fide stand-alone El Camino model that year. As these coupe pickups were both on station wagon chassis, component sharing was all but necessary to justify the lower production numbers of the open-back models. When the El Camino came back from its three-model-year hiatus in 1964, it shared a platform with the all-new Chevelle. Ford brought this concept to America with the Ranchero in 1957, and Chevrolet joined in by 1959 and ’60 with the Impala-based El Camino. The genesis of the El Camino came from Australia, where there was a market need for truck-like utility as well as car-like comforts in the same vehicle. It was both completely irrational and the perfect dual-purpose machine, depending on how you looked at it. With this car, you were able to haul whatever you needed to haul during the week, and on the weekends, you could head out to the drags and run low 13s in the quarter mile. Some sources place their build number at just over 500, and documented examples are even more scarce. But even more rare than that was the LS6 El Camino, like our subject car. Only about 4,500 LS6 cars were built in ’70. Party in the front, business in the backĪ documented original LS6 Chevelle isn’t something you see every day. And you could still have your LS6 engine, too. But what if you needed to haul things every once in awhile? Bigger things than would fit in that Chevelle’s trunk? Regardless, these A-bodies were just the thing for brutal acceleration, endless doughnuts and city-block-long burnouts. ![]() Horsepower was king in 1970, and the LS6 cars were rated at 450, although some call that rating conservative. You may never get agreement from brand-loyal car fanatics over which of these was the baddest OEM muscle car ever built, but GM person or not, you have to agree that the LS6 is deserving of the reputation. And from Chevrolet, it’s the ’70 LS6 Chevelle. From Ford, it’s mostly the Shelby GT500 or Mustang Boss 429. From Mopar, that nod usually goes to the Hemi ’Cuda. In the minds of most car guys, only a few cars can compete for all-time top-dog muscle-car status.
